High school students in mid-Missouri will have an opportunity to attend art workshops hosted by William Woods University this summer. The workshops in August will allow 9th-12th grade students to experience college-level instruction, expectations and outcomes.

The first workshop, drawing, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 1-5. Painting will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 1-5. Sculpture-ceramics will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 8-12. Students can choose to attend one, two or all of the sessions. The workshops will be conducted in the Gladys Woods Kemper Center for the Arts.

During the drawing workshop, students will experience a multitude of drawing media, including charcoal and pastel to create landscape, still life, and portrait drawings each day. 1-point, 2-point, and 3-point perspective will be covered in depth.

Painting is one form of expression that will be explored in the workshops.

Oil and water-based painting will be the focus of the painting workshop. Students will work on daily assignments that will lead to spontaneous, abstract paintings, as well as more elaborate, realistic works. Landscape, still-life, and portraiture are addressed using this traditional medium.

In the sculpture-ceramics workshop, students will discover how clay may be transformed into beautiful slab or self-supporting sculptures. Clay has been used by artists since the beginning of historical time. The plastic qualities of clay allows the material to be modeled into functional and non-functional objects.

“The amazing experience we had last summer in working with our Kemper Kids generated the idea to expand our community outreach by inviting high school students to participate in these art workshops at William Woods,” said Nicole Petrescu, gallery coordinator.

“These workshops are a prelude to college-level art classes that students may experience on our campus. Each theme gives us the opportunity to introduce different media and to create a variety of experiences to enjoy. We are looking forward to exhibiting the students’ artwork at the end of each session and celebrating their accomplishments with family and friends, as well as the Fulton community.”

The cost of each session is $200, which includes all arts and crafts materials, t-shirt, daily snacks and drinks. Lunch is not provided. Discounts are awarded for multiple-session attendance, additional siblings and to all WWU employees.
