One of the most prominent individuals in the nation’s Deaf community, renowned for his travels around the world telling stories about Deaf people, has William Woods University (WWU) as his next destination.
Joel Barish, founder of DeafNation, will be delivering a presentation about his global travels on Thursday, September 28 at 6 p.m. at the WWU Library Auditorium. The event is part of the university’s commemoration of Deaf Awareness Week, and is free and open to the public. There will also be interpreters available for the non-signing public and students.
Barish founded DeafNation, Inc., in 2003, and it has become a household brand name in the Deaf community, bringing relevant news, information, and stories to Deaf people through American Sign Language (ASL) videos and social media. Through his 90-minute vlogs, Barish documents his world travels visually, creating stories and narratives of Deaf people around the world that explore their communities and culture. In 2013, he was awarded the LCCF Alice Cogswell Award for valuable service on behalf of Deaf citizens.
Barish’s presentation is a joint effort of the William Woods Interpreter Training/ASL Studies program, which is frequently ranked among the top Interpreter Training/ASL Studies programs in the nation, and the Missouri School for the Deaf.
