William Woods awards first Associate’s degree for a high school Dual Enrollment student

High School graduation day is one of those moments that stand out with other life milestones.

A rite of passage. A celebration of accomplishment. An ode to that wonderful idea of having one’s entire life in front of them.

For Kennedy Wisdom, graduation from New Bloomfield (Mo.) High School on May 23 was a little bit of all of these things, and then some. And that is because Wisdom was graduating with two degrees that day – her high school diploma, and an Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Leadership from William Woods University (WWU), which she earned through a unique program at The Woods called the Dual Enrollment program.

WWU’s own Gayle Lampe was on hand at New Bloomfield High School to present Wisdom with her AA degree from William Woods, an accomplishment she’ll never forget.

“It’s been such an amazing journey, and I’m incredibly thankful to be graduating with both degrees in hand,” said Wisdom, who will enroll at WWU in August with plans to major in Psychology. “I believe the Dual Enrollment program at William Woods is one of the best things a high school student can do. I can’t recommend it enough!”

William Woods has an agreement with both New Bloomfield High School, and the nearby Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Mo., that permits dual enrollment students to complete their AA as dual enrollment students in high school. Through the program, select high school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to complete college level courses on the William Woods campus, or as online students. It is an option that carries great appeal for many high school students looking to get an affordable jump on their college education, like Kennedy Wisdom.

“Whether it’s just one class to get a head start, or 25 classes to finish a degree like I did, this program opens doors that many high schoolers might not even realize are available,” said Wisdom. “It gave me a huge head start on my college journey, helped me discover what I’m passionate about, and saved both time and money.”

“Our dual enrollment program offers a unique opportunity for high-achieving students to challenge themselves intellectually and explore their passions at a deeper level,” said Dr. Caroline Boyer, WWU Provost. “For graduates like Kennedy, earning an AA while still in high school demonstrates exceptional commitment and provides an springboard, allowing them to enter their next chapter with advanced standing and a clear vision for their academic pursuits.”

Admission into the Dual Enrollment program is restricted to high school junior and senior level students with a 19 composite ACT score or a 3.00 minimum high school grade point average, as well as recommendation from a guidance counselor. Enrollment is limited on a space available basis. Those students interested in Dual Enrollment should make arrangements with the appropriate secondary school officials and, in consultation with them, identify a course of study.

“One of the best paths to lower the overall investment for a 4-year private Liberal Arts degree is by partnering with William Woods University for dual enrollment,” said Dr. Ted Blashak, Chief Online, Enrollment and Student Experience Officer at WWU. “It allows high school students in Missouri to earn both their diploma and an associate degree, cutting college costs by up to $30,000 and speeding up their path to a four-year degree. It’s an innovative way to save money and get a head start on college success.”

The experience earning her AA in Leadership will be invaluable in the real world for Wisdom, who dreams of becoming a Sports Psychologist.

“With (WWU alum) Dr. Sarah Wisdom as my mom, leadership has always been a part of who I am, something I have seen modeled on every day of my life,” she said. “She and many individual like her have taught me the belief that leadership isn’t just a title, it’s a way of thinking, speaking, and acting that uplifts others and strengthens communities. In today’s world, we need confident, compassionate leaders more than ever. Whether it’s in the classroom, a boardroom or just among peers, strong leadership skills make all the difference.”

And now, Wisdom will await August and enrollment into The Woods, her top choice for college all along.

“In many ways, I have felt like a William Woods Owl since the very beginning,” she said. “William Woods has always held a special place in my heart, not just because of its beautiful campus and tight-knit community, but also because of the legacy of my family. Both my mom and my aunt (Mrs. Morgan DeVore) are proud alumni, and their stories and successes inspired me early on. I truly feel at home at William Woods and couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else.”
