Steel Magnolias: A Southern Classic at WWU

Southern humor, classy women, and close-knit female friendships are only a few of the fantastic things audience members can expect from the William Woods University production of “Steel Magnolias.” It’s the story of the neighborhood ladies going to the hair salon on Saturdays.

Director and assistant professor of Communication, Melissa Alpers-Springer, believes many people will enjoy this show, which is based on the popular play and movie (starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, and Julia Roberts). “Steel Magnolias has a wide appeal for both students and community members. There’s a lot of good southern humor and southernisms. It’s going to be a very high-quality show.”

Expect nothing but the best from this performance, as the all-female cast has been learning a lot about their characters, the play, and the world during the late 80s in Louisiana.

Olivia Davidson, leading lady and junior from Liberty, MO., shares, “We were given a character analysis saying who our character was, what the names meant, an in-depth analysis about the play, etc.”

The cast is comprised of six people: four William Woods students (Elisa Parker, Caitlyn Ney, Jessica Fleeman, and Olivia Davidson) and two Fulton community members (Suzy Johnston and Lindsey Hux, who is also a 2004 alumna).

The small cast gives the characters in the play that southern small town feel.

As Johnson says, “My favorite part of this play is the story of the strength of the relationship between these women.”

Performances will take place April 27, 28, and 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the McNutt Campus Center’s Cutlip Theater at William Woods, with a matinée at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Ticket prices are: $10 for adults, $5 for children (6-12), $7 for WWU faculty and staff, and $6 for seniors (62+). Group rates are available. Parental guidance is required for children under the age of 12. The Thursday night performance will be interpreted for the deaf.
