WWU plans Smart Art Camp for high school students

High school students of mid-Missouri will have an opportunity to attend a new art camp hosted by William Woods University. The Smart Art Camp allows 9th-12th grade students to express their artistic side through drawing, painting, sculpture, clay and mold-making. The camp will be held in the Gladys Woods Kemper Center for the Arts.

Three, five-day sessions will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The first session, Drawing, will be held June 8-12. Painting will be offered June 15-19. Sculpture, Clay, and Mold-Making will be held June 22-26. Students can choose to attend one or all of the sessions.

Drawing will focus on charcoal, pastels, ink, creating a finished drawing each day, as well as still life and self-portrait work. The Painting session will explore the application of water-based paints and studying masters such as Van Gogh, Picasso and Monet. The final session, Sculpture, Clay and Mold-Making, will teach students clay and plaster sculpture techniques, raku firing and mold making. Each student will take home at least one finished sculpture.

outreach by inviting high school students to participate in the newly created fine arts camps at WWU,” said Nicole Petrescu, gallery coordinator.

“These camps are a prelude to college-level art classes that students may experience on our campus. Each theme gives us the opportunity to introduce different media and to create a variety of experiences to enjoy. We are looking forward to exhibiting the campers’artwork at the end of each week and celebrating their accomplishments with family and friends, as well as the Fulton community.”

The cost of each session is $225, which includes all arts and crafts materials, camp t-shirt, daily snacks and drinks. Lunch is not provided. Discounts are awarded for early registration ($200 before June 1), multiple-week attendance, additional siblings and to all WWU employees. Registration may be dropped off at Kemper Arts Center between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday-Friday. It also can be mailed to:
