Elyssa Cappaert, a senior at William Woods University (WWU) and resident of Chesterfield, was honored with three prestigious awards from the university during the William Woods Academic Honors Convocation and Co-Curricular Banquet on April 27. At the end of each academic year, WWU recognizes a select group of graduating seniors who have achieved excellence in academic, co-curricular and service projects during their time at the university.
Cappaert, who graduated on April 28 with a degree in Biology with a Pre-Med concentration, received the Distinguished Scholar, OWL Achievement and SAC Outstanding Senior Awards from the university.
Cappaert was one of a select group of 21 seniors students to receive the Distinguished Scholar award. Faculty members designate one graduating senior from each program for the honor. While eligibility requires a minimum 3.4 grade point average, faculty also consider other relevant academic factors in the selection process.
Recipients of the OWL Achievement Award are selected for their Outstanding Wisdom and Leadership while a student at William Woods. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of at least 3.4 and have submitted a resume and list of campus activities for review. Criteria includes the student’s scholarship ability; participation and leadership in academic and co-curricular activities; citizenship; service the William Woods University and the community and potential for future achievement.
The SAC Outstanding Senior Award is presented to the graduating senior who demonstrates excellence in campus involvement, leadership and community service, with each student nominated by his/her peers.
Cappaert has been extremely active on campus during her time at WWU. She served as team captain and four-year member of the Owl women’s soccer team, where she earned first team Academic All-American honors, and honorable mention to the American Midwest Conference all conference team. She was also a member of the President’s Twenty, an elite group of students that are chosen to advise the president on university matters; Omega and Kappa Delta Honor Societies; Alpha Chi Omega sorority; Student Alumni Council; Biology and Pre-Med Club.
