WWU’s CourtWarming includes food drive for SERVE

its coming posterAdopting a theme from the popular movie series, “The Hunger Games,” William Woods University will kick off Courtwarming Tuesday, Feb. 17, with a food drive for SERVE and its local food pantry.

WWU’s sixth annual CourtWarming activities begin at 6:30 p.m. in Cutlip Auditorium with an event called “No Hunger in Our Games.” SERVE’s outreach director, Julie Roark, and executive director, Steve Mallinckrodt, will give a presentation about hunger in the Fulton community and what SERVE does to alleviate it.

After the presentation, the 2012 Hunger Games film will be shown. Students who bring a non-perishable food item for SERVE will be entered in a raffle for gift cards. Voting for the CourtWarming court will be conducted Wednesday through Friday during lunch, and those voting will be entered into the_hunger_games_movie_logo__ring__by_allheartsgoboom-d5yc4lethe raffle, as well.

A faculty and staff basketball game will tip off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in Anderson Arena.  Teams will play for 30-45 minutes. A pep rally, including games and giveaways, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in Anderson Arena. Students dressing as characters from “The Hunger Games,” will be entered to win prizes.

Basketball games begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, in Anderson Arena, when the women’s team takes Mockingjayon Park University. The men’s team will play Park University at 4 p.m. The king and queen will be announced and the MockingJay will be revealed.

“I am so excited for this week to start,” said Rachael Ostrem, junior class president at WWU. “The Junior Class Student Alumni Council members have been planning this week for months and are ready to show the campus what is in store. We are giving away HUNDREDS of dollars’ worth of gift cards and prizes and everybody gets a CourtWarming t-shirt if they participate in something during the week.”
