WWU to host Civil War movie

William Woods University will team up with Daniel Boone Regional Library to present a film about the Civil War on Feb. 21. “The Friendly Persuasion,” starring Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire, will be shown at 2 p.m. in the university’s Library Auditorium.

The movie event is free and open to the public.

William Wyler directs this 1956 film adaptation of the Jessamyn West novel “The Friendly Persuasion.” The movie retells West’s story of a happy, warm-hearted Quaker family, committed by faith to non-violence, but caught up in the backlash of the Civil War.

The family is confronted with a choice between their pacifist principles and their belief in the preservation of the Union. Although the 137-minute film is set in 1862, it is startlingly timely in terms of the issues being faced today.

Sarah Riddick, WWU assistant professor of English, will introduce the film.
