WWU Fraternities Wear High Heels to Support CARDV

Men in high heels! What is the world coming to?

Sneakers, loafers, athletic shoes and dress shoes—all are typically worn by men on the William Woods University campus. Now two fraternities are hoping to add high heels to the mix.

Phi Gamma Delta and Pi Kappa Alpha invite all men in the community to join them as they walk in high heels for the first “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event to benefit the Coalition Against Rape and Domestic Violence (CARDV).

During the walk, which is scheduled for April 5 at 9 a.m., men will walk for one mile around the campus in high heels to raise money and awareness for domestic and sexual violence.

“Recently in Greek Life across the country, fraternities have been taking a stand against domestic and sexual violence,” said Neil Stanglein, WWU coordinator of Greek life and student involvement.

“I am proud that the fraternities at William Woods University have taken a stand to educate others about domestic and sexual violence. They are reaching out to other fraternities, faculty and staff members and members of the community to participate in this event.”

People can support this walk several ways. Men who would like to participate in the walk can be sponsored by an organization or by themselves. All participants are responsible for providing their own pair of high heels.

Individuals or businesses can sponsor a member of Phi Gamma Delta or Pi Kappa Alpha to walk in high heels. They can specify a particular member, or a member will be chosen for them. Any donation will be accepted and is tax deductible through CARDV. All donors will be recognized at the walk.

CARDV continues to help women and children who are victims of domestic violence. In 2007, CARDV assisted 645 clients, up 44 from 2006. Every day, Missouri domestic violence programs serve 2,116 victims.

According to the Rape Abuse Incest National Network, it is estimated that every two minutes someone is sexually assaulted in America. One in every six women becomes a victim of sexual assault, compared to one in 33 males.

To participate in the event or make a donation, individuals need to send their name, their sponsor’s name (if they have one) and fundraising goal to the Office or Student Life, c/o Walk a Mile, One University Ave., Fulton, MO 65251.
