William Woods University students Carissa Biele and Mallory Means weren’t ready to hang up their dancing shoes when the graduated from Fulton High School, so the two young women decided to start a dance team on campus.
They approached Larry York, WWU athletic director, who approved the idea, and try-outs were held earlier this fall.
Tuesday, Dec. 7, will be the team’s dancing debut. The dance team, WWU dance classes and Fulton’s new dance company, Dance Ovations, will hold a recital in Dulany Auditorium. “A Night of Dance” will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Thus far, the dance team has been busy practicing and raising funds. A couple weeks ago, they held an auction. Currently they are finishing up calendars they made for another fundraiser. The calendars feature pictures of the dance team members.
Starting next semester, the dance team will perform at soccer, baseball and basketball events.
Means said, “I am really excited to be involved in the William Woods Dance team and all the new girls are so enthusiastic and hard working. This should become a very promising addition to William Woods.”
WWU dance team members from Missouri, in addition to Biele and Means, are Becky Burkemper, Old Monroe, Mo.; Steffanie Ducher, St. Louis, Mo.; Morgan Presley, St. Louis, Mo.; Alarie Sims, Blue Springs, Mo., and Christina Burkholder, Vienna, Mo.
Four are from Illinois: Sarah Chatham, Chatham, Ill.; Juliette LeBeau, LaGrange, Ill.; Meghan Parks, Quincy, Ill., and Dorothy Topa, Hanover Park, Ill.
Other dancers from out of state are Sara Beruith, Huntington Beach, Calif.; Kathryn Best, Medicine Hat, Canada; Brett Danuser, Atlanta, Ga.; Meridith Endris, Conroe, Texas; Meagan Fearon, Helena, Mont.; Ashley George, Albuquerque, N.M.; Dana Juncker, Mt.
