Beginning in the fall of 2010, the division of human performance at William Woods University will offer a minor in coaching, available to all students with an interest in athletics.
A coaching minor will provide education majors the knowledge base they will need to take on coaching duties at the secondary school level.
“Any other students interested in coaching for their local parks and recreation departments, YMCAs, club teams or be involved in a company’s sports team would also benefit from the coaching minor,” Anthony Lungstrum, chair of the division of human performance, said.
“It will teach them how to juggle both coaching and administrative duties, allowing them to run safe, fun and effective sports programs.”
Classes required for the coaching minor include theory classes, as well as support classes for background in non-theory areas in which coaches must be familiar. These support classes will include first aid and CPR, management of athletics, prevention and care of injuries and sports psychology.
