William Woods Announces Art Gallery Schedule for 2013-2014

IMG_7273bMichael Bauermeister, a wood sculptor from of Augusta, Mo., is the featured artist in the next exhibit in the Mildred Cox Gallery at William Woods University. The exhibit will run Oct. 1-31, with a gallery talk at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 1 and a reception to follow until 6 p.m.

Bauermeister has been carving wood for most of his life. He made furniture until he decided to switch from functional to solely decorative art some 20 years ago. His decision has no doubt paid off. He has received quite a bit of attention; most recently being featured in the June issue of American Craft magazine.IMG_7060b

He works with wood he acquires from an “urban logger” in St. Louis. This source distributes wood retrieved from places like city parks or landscaping projects that would otherwise be dumped in landfills.

Because of this, Bauermeister works with a great variety in the species of wood, much of which is slow growing. A major type he uses is linden wood.
Bauermeister creates tall vessels, wall pieces and sculptures and strives to recapture natural shapes and spaces intuitively. He works on a large scale, with some vessels reaching five and a half feet tall.

He incorporates a large amount of color, as well as texture, in his carving as he paints most of his pieces. The body of work on display in the Mildred Cox Gallery spans about 20 years of work, he said.
