Organizers will kick off the 2007 Fulton Colleges Fund Drive Tuesday (Aug. 14), with a breakfast for volunteers in Aldridge Recreation Center of William Woods University.
Volunteers will call on area businesses and individuals during the week. Their goal is to raise $58,000 to benefit Callaway County students who attend Westminster College or William Woods University.
Each year, the FCF board invites a local business, individual or organization to offer a $2,500 challenge grant to match increases over the previous year. This year Fulton Commons, Holiday Inn Express and Chop House Restaurant will provide the challenge grant.
Preliminary results of the drive will be reported during a luncheon Friday (Aug. 17) at Mueller Leadership Hall on the Westminster College campus.
The Fulton Board of Associates has sponsored an annual fund drive to secure local support for Westminster and William Woods since the fall of 1967. Each year, more than 90 volunteers lend their time, calling on businesses and individual contributors. Very few communities of comparable size show this type of dedication and commitment.
The money raised is divided equally between the two institutions, and the gifts help fund scholarships for outstanding students in Callaway County.
William Woods University students currently receiving scholarships through the Fulton Colleges Fund and Board of Associates are Ryan Back, Amanda Hosenfelt, Harrison Jones, Mary Payne, Cheryl Perkins, T.J. Quick, Ashlee Schlueter and Kim Small.
Scholarship recipients at Westminster College are Erin Baysinger, Stephanie Beamer, Morgan Campbell, Christian Forbis, Ashley Harrison, Theodore Mudd, Andrew Revelle and Brian Russell Jr.
Last year, volunteers raised more than $53,000 for the fund, which also assists both institutions with operating expenses. The Fulton Colleges Fund Drive has raised more than $1 million in the past 39 years.
Developer Dale Nichols is a large supporter of the Fulton Colleges Drive, and he would like to see even more contributions to this year’s event.
“The staff or the Fulton Commons, Holiday Inn Express, and Chop House Restaurant are pleased to announce a challenge grant in support of this year’s Fulton Colleges Fund Drive,” Nichols said.
“We are honored to be part of the strong community support for Westminster and William Woods and invite you to join us in making the 2007 drive a success.”
John Pautz, president, Board of Associates and Fulton Colleges Fund, stressed the importance of the two schools to the community and encouraged everyone to get involved.
“As we go about our daily business, we probably do not often stop and think about the important role William Woods University and Westminster College play in our community,” he said. “They offer many cultural and educational opportunities to our community, and they provide a significant boost to our area economy by bringing nearly 1,500 students to live in our town throughout the greater part of the year.”
He added, “The Fulton Colleges Fund has provided scholarships to Callaway County students for many years. This is our opportunity to show our support and assist in providing the opportunity for talented area students to stay in our community and attend college. Please join me in supporting this important cause.”
