Twin Graduates of 1932 Return for Alumni Weekend at WWU

Twins who graduated in 1932 will be returning to campus to celebrate their 75th reunion during Alumni Weekend at William Woods University.

Violet (Vi) Strank Lehman of Atchison, Kan., and Vivienne Strank Updyke of Wellsville, Mo., seldom miss an Alumni Weekend, but this one is extra special for the 94-year-olds.

University officials cannot remember anyone coming back for a 75th reunion, much less twins.

This year’s theme is “Hats Off to the Woods!! It’s Woods Weekend.” More than 165 alumni are expected to attend the event, April 20-22.

On Saturday, April 21, Kate Karcher Clark ’88 of New York City will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award; Judy Kuergeleis Schmuck ’72 of Wildwood, Mo., will receive the Green Owl Award, and Sarah Rowland of Kansas City, Mo., will be named Honorary Alumnus.

All alumni of William Woods have been invited, but the reunion classes of 1932—celebrating 75 years, 1957—celebrating 50 years, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2002 will be specially recognized.

The weekend starts off with the William Woods/Westminster Golf Tournament at the Tanglewood Golf Course from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 20. The tournament will be a four-person scramble for alumni, friends, spouses and parents.

A $50 fee includes greens fee, cart, lunch and prizes. Registration begins at 9 a.m. that day, but reservations must be made by Wednesday, April 18.

For those not playing golf, there are other sporting options. At 2 p.m. Saturday, the Owls alumni basketball team will play. The Owls softball team is scheduled for a doubleheader, also at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Owls baseball team will play Sunday at 2 p.m.
