The 14 students in the advanced nutrition class at William Woods University took a trip to the Fulton Food Bank at SERVE recently for a service-learning project. The students unloaded trucks of food, stocked shelves and helped detail the food bank trucks while they were there.
“Working at the SERVE Food Bank is a great learning experience on many levels,” said Cindy Robb, who teaches the class. “Many students have never been in an environment of need. They see that not everyone has a choice of what they eat and how that affects a person’s health.”
She added, “The students also get to give back to the community, extend a helping hand and interact with people they don’t regularly interact with. True learning happens outside a person’s comfort zone, and I believe this activity puts the student in their stretch zone.”
