Summer Riding Program Provides Equal Opportunity For All Ages

William Woods University’s Summer Riding Program kicks off June 10, marking its 12th anniversary year. The program provides a comprehensive horse experience and an equal riding opportunity for riders of all ability levels.

The program is divided into three sessions, not based upon experience, but upon age. The adult session for ages 18 and up runs June 10-13. A session for ages 14-17 runs July 4-9, followed by a session for ages 10-13 on July 11-16. All three sessions will take place in the William Woods Equestrian Complex, located on campus.

Each session will offer the participant a choice of lessons in Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat or Western and will accommodate any rider, from beginner to advanced. Regardless of riding experience, the sessions provide each participant with the opportunity to leave at the end of the week a versatile equestrian.

All horses will be provided by the university, but participants are responsible for grooming and tacking up before riding, and thoroughly cooling down and grooming their horses after their riding lessons. Staff members will provide guidance, along with discussions on conformation, health care, unsoundnesses, handling and show grooming, to help assist participants in their stable responsibilities.

The adult session is $325, which includes riding lessons, all class materials and a summer program t-shirt. Participants are expected to provide their own meals, housing and transportation.

The remaining two sessions are both $625. This cost includes riding lessons, all class materials, field trip transportation costs, a summer program t-shirt and room and board. Two to four resident advisors, along with the riding program director, will live in the air-conditioned residence halls with the under-18 participants.

Last summer, more than 100 riders from 15 different states participated in the William Woods Summer Riding Program. With the program continuing to grow, applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

To apply, send a $50 deposit with a registration form. Included in each registration deposit is a $25 non-refundable fee. Participants are selected based on the order in which applications are received. Space is limited: 20 participants for the adult session and 50 for each of the under-18 sessions. Those wishing to apply with a friend of a different age group will need to contact the program director to make arrangements.
