Stephens’ Papers to be Preserved in Western Historical Manuscript Collection

Sharon Kinney Hanson, author of a new book on Helen Stephens, watches a video tape on the “Fulton Flash” during a reception at the University of Missouri Wednesday. Hanson transferred the Olympic icon’s papers to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at MU for preservation, and a dedication ceremony was held in honor of Women’s History Month. Stephens was a Callaway County farm girl and William Woods University student who rose from obscurity to international fame during the 1936 Berlin Olympics. She won two gold medals and set a world record in the 100 meters that lasted for more than two decades.
