Cook_Sam-bwc_credit Rob HillSam B. Cook, Central Trust Bank chairman of the board and former William Woods University board member, has made a significant gift in support of the university’s Imagine Campaign, Dr. Jahnae H. Barnett, WWU president, has announced.

“For decades, Sam Cook, his family and our friends at Central Bank have been staunch supporters of William Woods,” said Barnett.  “Sam is a true friend of our faculty, staff, and students.  We are honored to accept this gift on their behalf.”

“Under Dr. Barnett’s strong leadership, William Woods has distinguished itself as a high quality university that is continually evolving to meet the demands of higher education and the market place,” said Cook, a longtime resident of Jefferson City.

“This gift will help provide both a setting that furthers William Woods’ mission in providing a well-rounded education and a gathering place for all of Mid-Missouri to enjoy.”

In gratitude for this substantial gift, Barnett announced that the amphitheater, soon to be built on campus, will bear the name Sam B. Cook Amphitheater.WWU_Animation_01 005

The 250-seat amphitheater will sit behind the new Sorority Circle adjacent to the McNutt Campus Center, Junior Lake and Aldridge Recreation Center. The amphitheater will be a major asset of the university’s widely recognized theatre department. The Callaway Arts Council is enthusiastically looking forward to hosting local arts functions at the amphitheater.

The amphitheater is part of the Sorority Circle Complex, which is one of the three initiatives of the Imagine Campaign.  The renovation of the president’s home into an alumni and visitors center, along with establishing an endowment for the Center for Ethics and Global Studies, round out the initiatives.
