The American Royal today announced Gayle Lampe as the recipient of the 2002 Missouri-Kansas Horse Person of the Year. The Horse Person of the Year award is given to an individual who has worked in the saddle horse industry in Missouri or Kansas and had a significant impact on the industry both regionally and nationally. Recipients will also have demonstrated noteworthy loyalty to the American Royal, both as an exhibitor and a sponsor.
“Gayle Lampe has brought great acclaim to the equine industry, as well as making outstanding contributions to our rich local equine heritage,” said George Guastello, American Royal president and CEO. “We are honored to once again highlight the best of the best during our American Royal Saddle Horse Show.”
For more than 30 years, Gayle Lampe has been an instrumental force in William Woods University’s nationally acclaimed equestrian science department, where she participated in the development of the country’s first four-year academic degree program in equestrian science.
Lampe has been named United Professional Horseman Association’s (UPHA) Equitation Instructor of the Year, Missouri Horse Show Association’s Trainer of the Year, American Riders Instructor of the Year, and is a two-time recipient of the Distinguished Professor Award at William Woods University.
The American Royal Saddle Horse Show, the oldest American Saddlebred show in the world, will be held Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the American Royal Complex in Kansas City, Mo. Friends and colleagues of Gayle Lampe will gather in the ring that evening as Jahnae H. Barnett, president of William Woods University, delivers a tribute to the honoree.
In addition, Barnett will read a proclamation signed by Missouri Governor Bob Holden announcing Nov. 19, 2002, as “Gayle Lampe Day” for her outstanding accomplishments in the equine industry.
The American Royal, now in its 103rd year, celebrates the region’s rich agricultural heritage through competition, education and entertainment. The American Royal annually hosts one of the Midwest’s largest livestock exhibitions, horse competitions and rodeos and is one of Kansas City’s premier fall events.
