Novelist to Speak about the Writing Process at WWU

Novelist and short story writer Darren Defrain will talk about the writing process and read a story at William Woods University Thursday (Nov. 13).

Sponsored by Writers Ink, the program is 4-5 p.m. in the Mildred Cox Gallery of the Gladys Woods Kemper Center for the Arts. It is free and open to the public.

Defrain is the director of the creative writing program at Wichita State University. He published a novel in 2005 titled “Salt Palace” and recently published a book of stories called “Inside and Out.”

His stories have been described as “a wealth of voices, each acting as a single instrument in… an orchestral version of our American life” (Antonya Nelson) that bring to life “a contemporary America” with a “comic center” (Stuart Dybek).

“Darren’s work is lively and down-to-earth, and he is a warm, generous speaker,” Writers Ink sponsor Matt Dube said. “Come for a great afternoon literary event in a wonderfully evocative space, the Cox Art Gallery. Hear Darren read his fiction and understand why the Kansas City Star shortlisted his ‘Salt Palace’ as a Best Novel 2005 and why he was a finalist for Foreword Magazine’s Best Small Press Novel.”
