Sturgis most recently taught at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo, as a lecturer in the society and environment department. Previously he taught sociology for five years at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He has also taught sociology at the University of Missouri.
After completing a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., Sturgis earned a Master of Arts degree in sociology and criminal justice at Lincoln University, as well as a Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Missouri.
Sturgis has made numerous presentations on religion and deviance and faith behind bars. He also has authored or co-authored pieces in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Journal of Offender Rehabilitation and Review of Religious Research.
He is a member of the Midwest Sociological Society and the Religious Research Association, and he has received two graduate and professional council travel grants from the University of Missouri.
