Incredible Acrobats of China to Perform

One of the most spectacular shows in Branson, the Incredible Acrobats of China, will do a public performance at William Woods University in September to benefit the student scholarship fund.

“Audiences of all ages will be absolutely thrilled by the amazing acrobatics and gravity-defying feats,” according to the Branson Travelhost Magazine. “Brilliant costumes, lighting and gorgeous set décor combine to set the stage for an outstanding time!”

The 42-member cast, part of the New Shanghai Circus, will perform in Cutlip Auditorium of the McNutt Campus Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17. Ticket prices will be $5 for students (with ID) and children, $10 for regular seating and $20 for premium seating.

The fast-paced, fascinating show includes a contortionist, bench balancer, jar juggler, traditional Chinese magic, aerial ballet and plate spinning. The performers accomplish complex acrobatic feats using the simplest of props—plates, rings, barrels, soccer balls, a bike and a lot of tables stacked high upon each other.

The show is a beautifully orchestrated presentation of Chinese circus acts dating back to the harvest festivals of 2,000 years ago. Each act requires skill and precision, and the Chinese acrobats who perform this exotic art form dedicate many hours of practice to the seemingly impossible stunts.

The cast, ranging in age from 11 to 50, is regarded internationally as the top company of acrobats in the People’s Republic of China. The talented troupe, which has performed on Broadway in previous years, will return to New York City to entertain later this year.

Melvin Hall, a member of the William Woods University Board of Trustees since 1962, is responsible for bringing the magnificently choreographed performance of Chinese circus acts to Fulton. Hall, who is chairman of the board of Branson Inn, Inc., also brought the high-profile performer Wayne Newton to William Woods for a benefit concert in 1999.
