Flying lanterns at WWU spread awareness of domestic violence

Students at William Woods University are using flying
lanterns to create awareness of domestic violence.

The men of Phi Gamma Delta and the women of Alpha Chi Omega
lit the lanterns Feb. 12 in support of the local Coalition Against Rape and
Domestic Violence (CARDV).
Matt Kornegay of Phi Gamma Delta came up with the idea when
he was researching special effects for a show. He organized the event as a
bonding activity with Alpha Chi Omega, whose national philanthropy is domestic
violence awareness.
“We wrote on the balloons facts about domestic violence,”
Kornegay said.  “When launched the lanterns go anywhere from a fourth of a mile to 10 miles, depending on the
breeze they catch.”
More than 15 lanterns were launched, including one dedicated
to Alpha Chi Omega’s senior class.  Each
group made a wish in CARDV’s honor as they released their lantern.
The women of Alpha Chi Omega continue their fight against
domestic violence this week with their annual philanthropy event, Lyre
Fest.  Greek organizations from William
Woods and Westminster College participate to raise money and collect items to
donate to Fulton’s CARDV chapter.
