Nicole Devenport of Huntsville, Mo., has received a scholarship from the Missouri Colleges Fund (MCF) in recognition of her accomplishments at William Woods University. She is pursuing a degree in education.
Money for the scholarship came form Citigroup, which provided $101,400 to Missouri Colleges Fund to fund 26 scholarships of $3,900 each at MCF-member independent college and universities. The funds were restricted to graduating seniors who intend to go into teaching in a public school in Missouri next September.
A graduate of Westran R-1 School District, Devenport said she was inspired to teach by her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Oliver.
“My teacher was having back trouble and could not teach the second semester. She was in a lot of pain but still continued to visit and make sure the substitute was doing a good job. I could tell she really cared about us. At that time I knew that was what I wanted to be… I wanted to be a teacher who cares about her students and wants her students to succeed.”
Devenport, a senior at WWU, has played on the Owls softball team for four years. She has a 3.05 GPA.
