Delta Gamma helps raise money for children with visual impairments

Members of Delta Gamma sorority at William Woods University
recently lent a hand at a Christmas tree lot to benefit the Delta Gamma Center
for Children with Visual Impairments.

This Christmas was the 61st year for the Delta
Gamma Shining Light Tree Lot in St. Louis, Mo. The lot is open during the
holiday season from the day after Thanksgiving to mid-December on the property
of McCarthy Building Companies. Patrons can purchase trees, wreaths and other
holiday items.

The lot is a
tradition that began in 1951 with the founding of the Delta Gamma Center. A
group of Delta Gamma alumni started the organization to serve the needs of
young children in the St. Louis area with visual impairments and blindness.

The center is the only organization in the
metropolitan St. Louis area that addresses the early intervention and support
needs of families and children with vision loss. The center provides home-based
educational services for parents/caregivers and their infants and toddlers,
birth to 3 years, who are blind or visually impaired.

Delta Gammas give more than 120,000 Service for Sight
volunteer hours each year. Several chapters of Delta
Gamma volunteer at the tree lot. Delta Omega chapter of Delta Gamma at William
Woods University helps out at the tree lot on the first Saturday of December.
The members look forward to this annual service project for several reasons.
Hannah Podgorski, a junior from Glastonbury, Conn., relished watching one
family buy a wreath she had decorated.
Trena Hass, a freshman from Naperville, Ill., “loved seeing the families out together picking out their
trees. The little kids’ faces when their family took home their favorite tree
were wonderful.”
Allie Malone, a sophomore from Chula Vista,
Calif., said her “favorite part was that the tree lot service project combined
all aspects of what DG stands for, and made them really fun to do.” She
mentioned such things “as helping the community by picking them out Christmas
trees, raising money for service for sight, and spending time with sisters!”
