Centralia Wins WWU Academic Tournament

Area high school students competed in a round-robin academic tournament at William Woods University March 29, hosted by members of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society.

The tournament began at 9 a.m., with the six participating teams going head-to-head, answering questions from various academic fields. After five rounds, the semifinals teams were determined, which lead to South Callaway and Centralia competing in the final round. Centralia walked away the winner.

“The competition was obvious from the start, and by the time we were in the final round, the competition was very intense,” said Dr. Katricia Pierson, assistant professor of English and Sigma Tau Delta advisor.

Roughly 60 people were involved in making the event possible, including the students participants, members of Sigma Tau Delta, coaches, parents and interested spectators.

The idea of the academic tournament came about last fall when Alex Dzurick, a South Callaway High School student, approached Pierson about hosting a local tournament before the schools went to district competition April 12.

“We would like to make it an annual event,” said Pierson. “Even with the competitive attitude, the high school students were amazing. Every one of them was polite, courteous, and generally fun to be around.”

Centralia participants were all seniors—Andy Robinson, Andrew Lincoln, Andrew Cutforth and Melissa McBride. They were coached by Ryan Kennedy.

South Callaway team members were seniors Matt Kimminau, Alex Dzurick and Dakota Dillion and junior Edward Norris. Their coach was Jim Farthing.

School of the Osage participants were seniors Samantha Tucker and Tony Muruato and sophomores Casey Burton and Joe Vanderveld. They were coached by Cinda Muruato.

Making up the Cole County R-5/Eugene team were Blake Welschmeyer, senior; Ben Roberts, junior; Tate Lindley, sophomore, and Nick Willis, freshman. Coaches were Doug Farris and Mike King.

Mexico High School Team A participants were seniors William Seigfreid and Kelcie DeClue, junior Justin Winn and sophomores D J Stewart and Robert Seigfried. Lou Mongler coached the team.

Mexico High School Team B team members were senior Stephanie Price and freshmen Stephen Houke, Sierra Buck, Skyler Wathen and Ryan Beasely. They were coached by Katherine Hallock.
