Melissa Byers of Florissant, Mo., a senior theatre major at William Woods University, has been named to the 2002 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Byers also received the Distinguished Scholar Award for Theatre.
The daughter of Ricky and Sandra Byers, she was one of nine William Woods University students selected as national outstanding campus leaders.
A campus nominating committee and editors of the annual Who’s Who directory chose the students based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.
Byers joins an elite group of students from more than 2,300 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states. Outstanding students have been honored in the annual directory since it was first published in 1934.
The Distinguished Scholar Award is bestowed on the graduating senior who demonstrates academic excellence in a particular field of study. Candidates must earn a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.40.
While at William Woods, Byers has served as vice president, secretary and senate representative of the Jesters Club. She also served as community advisor, orientation assistant, Rho Chi sorority rush representative, and the on the board of community of trustees. She has been a member of Alpha Psi Omega national collegiate honor fraternity for theatre, Alpha Phi, Campus Ambassadors and Hands On interpreter club.
Byers has also received the Most Contribution to Theatre Award, Outstanding Achievement in Theatre Award and certificates of achievement in lighting design, scenic design, stage management and directing during her career at WWU.
