Amber Cox to speak at WWU’s Career-A-Palooza

William Woods University alumna, Amber Cox, associate commissioner of women’s basketball for the Big East Conference, will return to campus this week to participate in Career-A-Palooza.

Career-A-Palooza is a weeklong series of events meant to help prepare students for the careers after college. Events will be held Nov. 10-14.

Cox has risen through the women’s basketball ranks, beginning her stint as associate commissioner in November 2013 after nine seasons with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, most recently as president and chief operating officer.

Recognizing her tremendous success and quick climb in the business industry the Phoenix Business Journal named Cox to its Forty-Under-40 Class of 2012.

Prior to joining the professional ranks, Cox served on the collegiate level as assistant director of athletics in charge of media relations and development at Columbia College. While in Missouri, she also served as the sports information director for the American Midwest Conference (AMC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Region V.

Before that, Cox spent time as an account executive at Visionworks Marketing and Communications in Columbia. A Missouri native, Cox earned her bachelor’s degree in communications/journalism and master’s degree in business administration from William Woods.

“I was lucky enough to hear her speak at my commencement ceremony back in May, and to hear her speak again is something I have been counting down the days for,” said Beth Oseroff, a graduate assistant in career services.

“When Amy (Dittmer, director of Career Services) said to me during planning that we needed a fun and engaging speaker, Amber was the first person to come to mind. She has an incredible career journey that our students are lucky to get to learn from.”

Cox will speak on “Do you want to be pitch perfect?” at 12:15 p.m. and “What’s your story?” at 5 p.m., both Thursday, Nov. 13, in Dulany Auditorium.

Her speeches are among several events planned for the week:
Resumania Workshop at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in the Ivy Room
LinkedIn Boot Camp at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in Dulany Auditorium
What’s the 411 on Interview at noon Wednesday, Nov.12, in the Library Auditorium
Career-A-Palooza Fair at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the Helen Stephens Sports Complex
