A William Woods University graduate, who is the chief operating officer of a professional basketball team, will kick off this year’s Alumni Speaker Series Oct. 5.
Amber Cox, COO of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, will speak in the WWU Library Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Cox, who played basketball while at William Woods, graduated in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and earned her MBA at WWU in 1998. Since then, she has held various jobs within the sports industry, leading up to her recent promotion to COO for the Mercury.
According to Becky Stinson, director of alumni relations, Cox’s career journey provides a great example of real life after college.
“Sometimes your ideal job is one you have to aspire to, rather than one you receive upon graduation,” she said.
Stinson said the Alumni Speaker Series was initiated so alumni could share their career experiences with current students, and give the students the opportunity to learn more about the reality of the job market and life outside The Woods.
The goal is for alumni with interesting or unique careers to show students how many possibilities there are for those who are open-minded and willing to work their way up.
“You learn from every job what you like and what you want,” said Stinson. “The ideal job in your head may not, in reality, be what you want. It’s important to be open to possibilities.”
