Remembering what the holiday season is all about, Alpha Chi Omega sorority at William Woods University partnered with Sigma Chi fraternity at Westminster College to adopt a family for Christmas.
Vanessa Thomas, a junior from St. Charles, Mo., and vice president of membership development for Alpha Chi Omega, is chairing the project and said the sorority and fraternity members just wanted to help those less fortunate.
“We wanted to help out a family that wouldn’t have a great Christmas otherwise,” Thomas said. “We were told that the family we’ve adopted cannot afford anything this Christmas, so the only gifts they will receive are the ones we buy them.”
According to Thomas, that really motivated the men and women. Some members bought toys and clothes for the children and others donated money. Then she and the sorority president, Heather Oetjen of Prior Lake, Minn., went shopping, spending nearly $300 to get whatever else they could. When all the shopping was done, they held a wrapping party to get the gifts ready for Christmas.
“Christmas should be a kid’s favorite part of the year,” Thomas said, “and we are really excited to help give these kids a great Christmas.”
